Providing financial incentives to landowners for biodiversity conservation

  • Using financial incentives for local conservation of biological resources

Implementation

In the United States, the Environmental Defence Fund (EDF), Landowner Conservation Assistance Programme, offers grants of up to $10,000 to local landowners who are willing to take steps to enhance or restore habitat for endangered species on their property. They might agree to plant trees, use prescribed burning to restore natural habitat, build fences to manage livestock in sensitive areas, or take other steps to improve habitat. Participation is completely voluntary. EDF is also offering to help landowners interested in establishing "safe harbor" agreements that give both landowners and wildlife added legal protection.
