Applying economic tools at the local level of biodiversity conservation

  • Using economic mechanisms in community biological resource management

Context

Local communities face similar economic problems as the rest of the country. As a result, communities living close to or in conservation areas regard environmental protection as a threat to their livelihood. It is important to ensure that local people have as much access to the protected areas as possible and at the same time help them find a more sustainable way of life and doing business. Support should therefore be concentrated on transforming the community's life without affecting the economic situation and without foregoing protection of the environment.
