Establishing codes of practice for science

  • Regulating scientific research
  • Developing codes of conduct for scientists
  • Promoting guidelines for science and technology

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends: (a) that codes of practice and guidelines, including on appropriate principles, should be developed for and by the scientific and technological community in the pursuit of its research activities and implementation of programmes aimed at sustainable development; and (b) strengthening national and international cooperation, including the non-governmental sector, to develop such codes of practice and guidelines, taking into account the Rio Declaration and existing codes of practice and guidelines.
