Suspended matter in water

  • Silt

Nature

Large amounts of suspended matter in water reduce light penetration and thereby interfere with photosynthesis in plant life in bodies of water. The solids can settle into sludge blankets which can smother the normal bottom dwelling organisms and destroy fish spawning beds. Suspended solids are often associated with oxygen demanding matter such as sewage, further polluting the water.
