False positive representation to authority

Prince Potemkin in 1787, as governor of Crimea, organized Empress Catherine's tour of the newly-annexed province. He is alleged to have erected false-front villages peopled by actors along her route, to impress her concerning the living standards of the population and their contentment under his rule.
