The function of the family in society has been lost. Families find themselves unable to function effectively in the ambiguity and insecurity of modern society. Families refuse to embrace the necessity of functioning in a global context. Previously, both men and women expected and experienced that the family provided them with love, happiness, proper role fulfilment, security for the future, and historical continuity through their children. Now the institution of the family is experiencing fragmentation in its day-to-day activities, with a shift to liberal sexual mores and a divisive alienation of life styles between generations. The question of what is to be gained from having a family is being raised. The marriage covenant has been replaced with a sexual contract. Or the family hides in the status quo.
