It has been estimated that in the USA about one million animals – including 21 species that are threatened or endangered – are killed every day by motor vehicles. Annually, this number includes between 1 and 2 million deer, 1.2 million dogs, 5.4 million cats (and between 4,000 and 5,000 humans).
Planes in the US strike more than 13,000 birds per year, according to a report by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Shipstrikes are notoriously difficult to quantify; it is estimated that every year at least ten whale deaths are caused by colliding with ships moving through North American waters and between 80 and 100 manatees are killed in Florida by motor boats.
