Mental consciousness
Description
This is the fourth stage in the evolution of consciousness, in which directed thought comes into operation. Discrimination and judgement in the waking state of consciousness determine the characteristics of reality on this level. Gebser, conceptualizing this level of consciousness, localizes its origin parallel to the establishment of patriarchy. Characteristics of mental consciousness are: abstraction; space-orientation; ratio (judgement); transformation of polarity into trinary synthesis.
