Urgent and renewed efforts are required to be undertaken by all countries in a spirit of international solidarity recognizing the principle of common but differentiated responsibility as contained in the Rio Principles to manage the environment so as to promote sustainable development for the benefit of present and future generations.
This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends that UNEP promotes international cooperation in the field of the environment and recommends appropriate policies to this end.
