European Council Directive 89/618/Euratom on informing the general public about health protection measures to be applied and steps to be taken in the event of a radiological emergency was adopted in the wake of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station, with a view to drawing up joint principles and specific provisions for informing the public and the emergency services.
