The aim is to increase awareness of the fundamental links between improving the status of women and demographic dynamics, particularly through women's access to education, primary and reproductive health care programmes, economic independence and the access to effective, equitable participation in all levels of decision-making.
This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.
