Improving national waste management and control policies

Context

Municipal and national authorities are increasingly concerned about the growing volume of wastes. Most worrying are concerns about the proper disposal of hazardous wastes and the lack of investment in and consequent deterioration of waste management facilities and services in the NIS.

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends reviewing and reforming national waste management policies to gain control over waste-related pollution.
