Imposing voluntary system of cryptography

  • Restricting control of encryption keys to government
  • Using encryption key escrow

Implementation

Governments, notably the USA and France, have advocated that selected government approved agencies, termed trusted third parties, should be set up to hold encryption keys on behalf of the corporations, banks and other bodies using them -- a process known as key escrow. When law enforcement officials need to decode a suspect communication they would present a warrant to these agencies.

Counter claim

  1. The system, although apparently reasonable, is open to abuse and is far from secure. Gathering encryption codes in this way would increase vulnerability of communications. France, in response to pressure from corporations, openly admitted that key escrow was useless in fighting crime and therefore appeared unwarrranted.
