Identifying human obstacles to animal migration

  • Recognizing man-made barriers to movement of animals

Implementation

The program, "Captains for Conservation" was launched in the USA in 1991. Its goal is to inspire "captains of industry" who own tall skyscrapers to turn off the lights on their buildings during migration season. In bad weather, birds must fly at lower altitudes and the rain/mist/fog can combine with lights to disorient birds, causing them to crash into skyscrapers.

California wind farms are taking the following steps to protect birds that fly into the blades of the wind turbines: (1) Retrofitting power lines to avoid electrocution; (2) Experimenting with different color blades and high frequency sounds that might deter birds; and (3) Paying more attention to bird migration patterns when choosing new development sites.
