Many scientists have religious belief, however inchoate. Indeed in the USA a good number of the highest performing science students are also deeply religious. Paul Davies, the British physicist who now teaches in Australia, says he feels the explanation of the way the physical universe was put together lies beyond scientific discovery. Frank Tipler, professor of mathematical physics in New Orleans, claims in The Physics of Immortality to provide theoretical proof of the existence of God. He holds that 'religion is simply too important to be left to its traditional professionals'.
