There are currently 21 species of Carnivora identified as being already extinct, endangered, or rare; including wolves, bears, ferrets, otters, ocelots, cougars, mountain cats and jaguars. The reasons for their actual or threatened extinction include: conflict with man (via attacks either on man or his livestock), habitat destruction and alteration, eradication campaigns (in the case of wolves), hunting for sport or fur, decline in prey, and highway mortality (the Florida cougar).
