Masochism

Nature

The inducement of sexual pleasure by inflicting pain on oneself, as in religious flagellation, may result in serious injury or death. Anyone cooperating with a masochist may lay himself open to charges of assault, manslaughter or murder.

Background

Masochism is named after the Austrian novelist Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1835-95) whose writings centred on the subject.
