Excessive portrayal of sex in the media

  • Increasing presentation of sexual activity on television
  • Glorification of demeaning sex in the media
  • Trivialization of sexuality

Incidence

Research published by the British Broadcasting Standards Council in 1994 indicated that the number of sex scenes rose from an average of 0.5 per hour in 1992 to 0.7 per hour in 1993 (although their average duration was shorter and less likely to be explicit). The average duration of such scenes was 15 seconds. In an average week, 28% of programmes contained 343 scenes depicting some form of sexual activity, ranging from kissing to intercourse, representing 0.5% of total broadcast time. The rates were higher on satellite television.
