Background
In mediaeval Europe people who strayed away from Catholicism were called dissidents. Later the term came to refer to all those who did not belong to Catholic or Protestant state religion.
Claim
Dissidents are the backbone of societal progress, yet they face relentless persecution in oppressive regimes. Their courage to challenge injustice and advocate for freedom is crucial for democracy and human rights. Silencing dissent not only stifles individual voices but also undermines the very fabric of society. We must recognize the importance of protecting dissidents, as their struggles illuminate the path toward a more just and equitable world. Ignoring their plight is a grave disservice to humanity.
Counter-claim
It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society. (Jiddu Krishnamurthi)
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. (Mark Twain)
