Fine art is being increasingly used to advertise products. Paintings are used in advertisements. Products may be inserted into the painting or a painting may be altered to make an advertising point. Classical music is used in television commercials. Great literature may be quoted in ads. Pictures of sculpture may be used.
The use of works of art to advertise is demeaning to the art and the artist and creates a false impression of quality or luxury for the products advertised.
Advertisements using art reflect the increasing importance of art for the public. The ads help educate the general public by exposing more people to fine art. Tampering with some painting for comic effect is harmless and many artists would have been amused, even flattered.
