The European Union, Finland, Brazil, China and other countries restrict un-treated coniferous wood packaging. End-users need to purchase packaging that is heat-treated and stamped. This is to avoid the import of pests.
Draft international standards for wood packaging (from the Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) require either fumigation or heat treatment of any raw wood packaging - including hardwoods, and complete de-barking. The packaging must be marked with the symbol, plus the method of treatment, country of origin, and number of the original producer of the packaging.
