Tested methods of farming can be adapted to the situations of small farmers and increase productivity in both the short and long run. These include diversification of land use, organic and natural farming approaches, soil development, conservation, wasteland reclamation and irrigation. Subsistence farmers resigned to their meagre lot over the years can be awakened to these methods through demonstrations, education, access to credit, new and simple technologies, servicing of these technologies, and horizontal and vertical linkages. Once aware of the possibilities, the farmers can decide.
