Suffering

Claim

Suffering has an important mission. It changes us and gradually creates in us a capacity for sympathy and humaneness (Martinus).

No one can experience anything other than the consequences of this own actions. No one can suffer unjustly. We cannot experience suffering other than the suffering we have inflicted on others. It is not our so-called enemies who are the ultimate cause of our sufferings. They are merely instruments for the returning effects of our own earlier actions. (Martinus).

Counter-claim

I do not believe that sheer suffering teaches. If suffering alone taught, all the world would be wise, since everyone suffers. (Anne Morrow Lindbergh).
