Focused research is needed to improve understanding of the exposure/response relationship. Such action has been initiated on the health effects of particulate in air and on selected aspects of indoor air quality by the European programme on environmental health research priorities. The European Science Foundation is carrying out this programme in collaboration with the European Commission and WHO, in accordance with the recommendations of the Helsinki Declaration on Action for Environment and Health in Europe.
