Returning radioactive waste to the supplier for safe storage or disposal

Context

Agenda 21 recommends promoting safe storage, transportation and disposal of radioactive waste and of spent radiation sources and spent fuel from nuclear reactors destined for final disposal, in all countries, in particular in developing countries, by facilitating the transfer of relevant technology to those countries and/or the return to the supplier of radiation sources after use, in accordance with relevant international regulations or guidelines.

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.
