In 1989, collectors of Brazil nuts were paid only 2 to 3 percent of the value of their nuts in the New York market. Analysis showed that transporting the nuts to a regional market center could double their value. Shelling the nuts could also expand revenue potential for collectors 20 to 40 times. Sorting the nuts according to market standards-there are seven classifications for Brazil nuts-could further enhance revenues because unsorted nuts sell for an average price pegged on less valuable classifications. Converting the nuts into specialty oil for the personal-care products industry could double or triple the value of unshelled nuts.
