The American Thoracic Society, the scientific arm of the American Lung Association decided in 1995 to no longer publish research conducted with funds from the tobacco industry. The society publishes two medical journals; the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology. The two journals publish only a few papers each year from researchers with tobacco industry funding. In 1994 alone, scientists with tobacco industry grants published 375 scientific papers in a wide array of journals.
