The USA agreed to buy 500 tonnes of Russian bomb-grade uranium for 12 billion dollars in 1992. Huge stocks of uranium built up in Russia as a consequence of dismantling nuclear weapons and the real danger of falling into the wrong hands was claimed as a reason for the purchase.
