Reducing measures supporting uncompetitive production

Market access would be improved if all countries implemented previous commitments to halt and reverse protectionism, particularly in areas of interest to developing countries. This would be facilitated by appropriate structural adjustment in developed countries and by developing countries continuing the trade-policy reforms and structural adjustment they have undertaken.

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.

It is urgent to achieve an improvement in market access conditions for commodities, notably the progressive removal of barriers which restrict imports, particularly from developing countries, of commodity products in primary and processed forms as well as the substantial and progressive reduction of types of support that induce uncompetitive production, such as production and export subsidies.
