Protecting against health hazards from fish, crustacea and molluscs
Context
There is increasing concern about fish farming methods in the Third World and fear of infectious disease from the crowded, brackish production pens. More generally, fish farmed around the world may be polluted, notably by antibiotics used in more affluent countries to reduce risk of disease amongst the fish.
Implementation
In 1998, it was reported that the European Union is considering a ban on imports of shrimp from Nigeria, Ghana and Pakistan for health reasons.
