Implementation

In 1993, 40,000 children around the UK were able to contribute creatively to a piece of music about the environment composed by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. In each participating school, the children's contributions were developed as part of the National Curriculum in music and on the environment. Each group of children created and remember their pieces first, then put them into their own notation. Some of these were integrated into the score of the composition, which was performed live and broadcast on national radio, providing a moving experience for both players and audience. It also showed how environmental education and a sense of creative personal participation can be enhanced among both children and adults.
