Overcoming drug habit

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is an international fellowship of recovering drug addicts who meet regularly to help each other drug clean. Started in 1953 under the inspiration of Alcoholics Anonymous, the movement is now active in over sixty countries with more than 25,000 weekly meetings. NA members have found that accepting that their addiction is a disease has helped them come to terms with it. They are encouraged to observe complete abstinence from all drugs.

1. The only realistic solution to the drug issue is to tackle it at the demand end, which is to educate people -- to address the issues of self-policing and taking care of one's own body.

2. People who have become entrammelled in drug-addiction are of us -- we share their humanity and they ours. It is intolerable that they should be alienated, discarded, treated as rubbish, forced by our rejection into an amplification of hopelessness. The process of recovery is not an imposed treatment but the offering of any alternative to being a drug-addict, and an invitation of growth, freedom and self-responsibility.
