Increasing information exchange on low cost sanitation

The 1980s saw considerable progress in development and application of low-cost water-supply and sanitation technology. Agenda 21 envisages continuation of this work, with particular emphasis on development of appropriate sanitation and waste disposal technologies for low-income high-density urban settlements.

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.

1. There should be international information exchange so as to ensure widespread recognition among sector professionals of the availability and benefits of appropriate low-cost technology. Public-awareness campaigns should include components to overcome user resistance to second-class services by emphasizing the benefits of reliability and sustainability.
