Improving viability of nuclear power plants

To be a viable energy source for the 21st century, nuclear power will have to meet several conditions. Most important, the performance of the current generation of reactors will have to improve. In addition, new power plant designs will be needed that are simpler, standardized and "passive" in their safety features (that is, relying less on the functioning of "active" components such as pumps, motors and generators.) Tighter construction standards will also be needed to ensure that only plants of the highest quality are built. Finally, progress will be needed on the storage of radioactives wastes -- a key step that will almost certainly required a more cooperative, less threatening working arrangements with potential host states.
