Whereas in the USA, the most common form of contraception is female sterilization, in northern Europe women prefer the intrauterine device (IUD).
Since 1999, 4 new contraceptive methods have been introduced to the USA. These methods are the monthly hormonal injectible, the vaginal ring (worn 3 weeks out of the month, releases a daily dose of etonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) the patch (as for the vaginal ring, self-administered, once weekly for 3 week), and the levonorgestrel intrauterine device.
