Engaging in mysticism

  • Using mysticism

Description

Establishing direct contact with the Divine or transcendent, beyond sense perception and usually beyond intellectual apprehension.

Context

Different forms of mysticism have different goals. Some Christian mysticism seeks a state of being wherein God acts in and through the soul. Other forms of mysticism seek the attainment of an inner state of consciousness, to be delivered from the illusion of this life.

Claim

(a) Direct experience of that which one believes to be at the source of reality affords one an unassailable perspective. (b) The Divine is the source of all creativity.

Counter-claim

Mysticism as a creed rejects the experience of society and the evidence of history, substituting the tradition of subjective experience in its place. It is thus an approach highly subject to delusion, which can have a social impact.
