Disseminating distributive justice

  • Infusing social justice into the socio-economic order
  • Allocating social benefits fairly in society

Description

Distributive justice is concerned with the fair allocationof the beheftis of a particular society (for instance, income, wealth, power and status) to its members.

Implementation

A commitment to global social justice and solidarity is fundamental to the socialist and social democratic political tradition. For socialists, there are obligations and responsibilities that transcend national borders. On the eve of the twenty-first century, it is totally unacceptable that one in four of the world's population - two-thirds of them women - continues to live in conditions of abject poverty: without access to adequate food, clean water, sanitation, essential healthcare or basic education services. Socialists believe that the elimination of abject poverty is a moral imperative, and that it should become an international political priority as we enter the new millennium.

The European Socialists and Social Democrats text on employment (1999) reads: "We must create the confidence to boost investment and to overcome the present slowdown which undermines prospects for growth and technological modernization not only in the short, but also in the long run. We call for a new policy mix at monetary, wage, fiscal and tax policy. The aim is to improve the potential for innovation and growth, and to create a more active and inclusive society. The old hire and fire policy will be replaced by economic reform. Confrontation will be replaced by social dialogue."< Global Exchange is a human rights organization dedicated to promoting environmental, political, and social justice around the world. Since their founding in 1988, Global Exchange has been striving to increase global awareness among the US public while building international partnerships around the world.

Claim

  1. The means of saving the world of today from the lamentable ruin into which a moral liberalism has plunged us, are neither the class-struggle nor terror, nor yet the autocratic abuse of State power, but rather the infusion of social justice and the sentiment of Christian love into the social-economic order. We have indicated how a sound prosperity is to be restored according to the true principles of a sane corporative system which respects the proper hierarchic structure of society; and how all the occupational groups should be fused into a harmonious unity inspired by the principle of the common good. And the genuine and chief function of public and civil authority consists precisely in the efficacious furthering of this harmony and coordination of all social forces. (Papal Encyclical, Divini Redemptoris, 19 March 1937).
