Distributive justice is concerned with the fair allocationof the beheftis of a particular society (for instance, income, wealth, power and status) to its members.
A commitment to global social justice and solidarity is fundamental to the socialist and social democratic political tradition. For socialists, there are obligations and responsibilities that transcend national borders. On the eve of the twenty-first century, it is totally unacceptable that one in four of the world's population - two-thirds of them women - continues to live in conditions of abject poverty: without access to adequate food, clean water, sanitation, essential healthcare or basic education services. Socialists believe that the elimination of abject poverty is a moral imperative, and that it should become an international political priority as we enter the new millennium.
The European Socialists and Social Democrats text on employment (1999) reads: "We must create the confidence to boost investment and to overcome the present slowdown which undermines prospects for growth and technological modernization not only in the short, but also in the long run. We call for a new policy mix at monetary, wage, fiscal and tax policy. The aim is to improve the potential for innovation and growth, and to create a more active and inclusive society. The old hire and fire policy will be replaced by economic reform. Confrontation will be replaced by social dialogue."< Global Exchange is a human rights organization dedicated to promoting environmental, political, and social justice around the world.
