Conducting isolation campaigns

Context

Individuals, groups, or countries may be the target of isolation campaigns because of an unacceptable stance on issues, whether ethical or non-ethical. The isolation campaign may be conducted in numerous ways, such as by enforcing an economic embargo, to persuade the party it is conducted against to change its stance.

Implementation

In 1993, the United States made Burma the focus of an isolation campaign in order to pressure the military junta to relax its grip on Burma's long-suffering citizens and to stop cooperating with the heroin producers whose output is flooding the USA. In recent years, Greece waged a widely disapproved isolation campaign, that included an economic embargo, against Macedonia. Macedonia was forced to redesign its flag and rename itself FYROM (the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).
