Adoring

Description

Having a reverential attitude toward that which one holds as the ultimate authority of life, acknowledging its greatness and one's own subjection by means of words or actions. Adoration occurs on individual, social and institutional levels, in both formal and informal activities.

Context

Although most cultures reserve adoration as a religious activity, it is also used in a secular context, among those who recognize the growing diversity of the world's, principalities and powers.

Implementation

Personal devotion to fetishes, saints, angels, devils, political leaders and ideologies. Cult and cultural devotional rites, like political rallies, especially for a charismatic leader.

Claim

  1. Adoration permits expression of extreme emotion in non-violent forms. It strengthens social consensus.

Counter claim

  1. Adoration can cloud social issues in such a way that constructive solutions cannot be applied.

  2. In its large, formal manifestation, adoration can use up human energy and material resources needed for other purposes.
