Abolishing border controls

Implementation

In 1995, the European Commission intends to propose legislation to abolish border controls within the European Union. In March 1995, controls ended within the so called Schengen group of EU states - people crossing borders between Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, France, and Portugal are not asked for identity documents. France has since then started border controls in response to terrorists threats.
