Unequal property rights for women

  • Denial of right to property to women

Nature

Throughout the world, women face various constraints related to access to land and property. This constraints may be legal, customary or economic. In particular, women in many countries do not have equal rights in the field of civil law, and in particular the right to acquire, administer, enjoy, dispose of and inherit property, including property acquired during marriage. Daughters may not have the same rights as sons to the property of their parents, and wives may not inherit their husband's property - in these cases, when a man dies, his property does not devolve on the widow and their children, but on relatives.

Claim

Women and girls are half of the world's population, do two-thirds of the world's work hours, receive a tenth of the world's income and own less than a hundredth of the world's property.
