In 1996, in the European Union as a whole, a higher proportion of women was underweight than men – 15% and 5% respectively. This was the situation in all EU member states. France had the highest proportion – roughly one in four– of underweight women. Belgium and the Netherlands had the highest proportion of underweight men.
