Essential tremor is described medically as an action tremor. The tremor typically affects the hands or wrists, so that your hands shake when moving towards a target, but can also affect the arms, head, voice, tongue and/or legs.

Incidence

Essential tremor affects1% of the population worldwide. It affects all ages and sexes. The onset of essential tremor tends to appear early (young adults in their 20s) or after the age of 60.
