Habitat destruction and intensive agriculture are the principal threats to Mogera etigo.

Mogera etico was formerly included in M. tokudae and has only ever been recorded in Niigata, Honshu, Japan.

Mogera etigo is considered by the IUCN Red List as "Endangered".
