Galemys pyrenaicus has declined because it is bound to a very vulnerable habitat in a restricted area. It is mostly threatened by water pollution and the construction of hydro electric plants which fragment the habitat. It has suffered from direct human persecution, through over-zealous collecting and from fishermen who perceive it as a threat to their stocks, especially trout. There is also concern regarding the accidental introduction of American mink Mustela vison in northern Iberia.
Galemys pyrenaicus is found in south west Europe, notably the French and Spanish Pyrenees, northern Spain and northern Portugal. The species lives along fast flowing mountain streams, although it can also be found in slower moving bodies of water.
Estimates of population numbers of Galemys pyrenaicus are difficult due to the secretive nature of the species.
Galemys pyrenaicus is considered as "Vulnerable" by the IUCN.
