Threatened species of Basidiomycota

  • Threatened species of Basidiomycetes
  • Threatened species of spore-dropping fungi
  • Endangered species of club fungi

Background

There are over 25,000 species in this phylum. Of the most well known are: Agaricus, including the supermarket variety of button mushrooms; Amanita including species that are deadly, edible, or even hallucinogenic such as fly agaric. Species in this phylum produce spores on a club-like structure called the basidium. The basidium may grow free or be attached to a surface called the hymenium.

The taxonomy of fungi is variable depending on the author. Phyla, classes and subclasses are often synonymous in different hierarchical systems.
