Forest destruction is the principal reason for the decline of Amozona vittata. Hunting and the wildlife trade have also contributed to its decline.
The Puerto Rican parrot Amazona vittata, a medium-sized, green bird with blue wing feathers, once inhabited the entire island of Puerto Rico and the neighbouring islands of Mona and Culebra.
At the beginning of the 21st century only a few Puerto Rican parrots remain in the wild and their survival may depend on the success of a captive breeding programme.
Amazona vittata is considered as "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN. CITES lists the species as "Appendix 1".
