Threatened species of Accipiter gundlachi

  • Threatened species of Gundlach's hawk

Nature

Accipiter gundlachi is threatened by the loss and disturbance of wooded habitats. Human persecution is a threat as it specializes on birds and is known to take poultry.

Background

Accipiter gundlachii is found in Cuba.

Incidence

Accipiter gundlachii although still spread throughout Cuba, has become ever rarer and more localised. Five main population centres are known to remain, three for nominate A. gundlachii in west and central Cuba (two of which are known to hold three and 20 pairs respectively), two for A. g. wileyi in the east of the island. There are less than 250 mature individuals and a continued decline of the population is expected.

Accipiter gundlachii is considered as "Endangered" by the IUCN Red List for threatened species. CITES lists the species as "Appendix 2".
