In one overnight raid in the UK, thieves removed an area of topsoil the size of a tennis court, complete with 6,000 bulbs and tuberous roots, from the grounds of a home for the disabled. Wildflowers and spaghnum moss are disappearing from moorlands. Some rare plant varieties are believed to be stolen to order, such as the UK's entire national collection of pseudopanax, a rare evergreen shrub, from a botanic garden.
