The spouses of torture victims are victims of the situation in which their mates were tortured. They are mostly women and are often held responsible for their husbands arrest by their neighbours. When the victim returns home with dramatic changes in behaviour they do not understand why. These wives have had to solve problems while alone because their husbands were in prison. They have had to find work, take care of the children, in many cases, carry on family obligations of large extended families, and deal with neighbours. Often the children of torture victims suffer psychological problems and place additional burdens on the family.
